Our History Sustainable Learning Australasia Pty Ltd (SLA) was established to meet an increasing demand in government, industry and other organisations for quality training previously managed by our sister organisation Waste Audit and Consultancy Services Pty Limited. Waste Audit was founded by Pam Keating in 1991, as of June 2008 Pam was no longer a Director with Waste Audit and was then Sustainable Learning’s Managing Director. Waste Audit successfully delivered consultancy services covering all facets of Waste Management. Training has always been part of the Waste Audit capability since inception but has seen exceptional growth in recent years. With the increased demand for our training the focus of resources in a separate entity under the Sustainable Learning name will enable us to better serve our client. Building on our years of success with Waste Audit, Sustainable Learning ensures that our clients enjoy the deep expertise of our Managing Director Mr Travis Keating, Senior Management and Consultants. Sustainable Learning has a workforce which shares well in excess of 100 years practical experience within the waste management and environmental sectors. Our joint clients cover major multi-national enterprises and all levels of government. We have capability to address projects in waste management and associated issues in Australia and overseas.
Pam Keating: 16/11/1954 - 26/01/2009 A leader of sustainability reform in industry Pam Keating, a passionate and visionary leader dedicated to the environment and the waste management industry, was tragically killed in a car accident on Australia day at the age of 54. Pam lived a full life as a wife, mother, businesswoman, and environmentalist. She was one of the first business leaders in Australia to fully grasp the challenges of the environment. Her work transformed the way businesses in Victoria and the rest of Australia manage their waste. Ahead of most of her contemporaries, Pam had a clear sense of how industry needed to reform its practices to safeguard the natural environment. She was convinced that environmentally sustainable businesses could be more profitable than the alternative and certain that a waste disposal business could successfully become a waste reduction business. She then founded Waste Audit and Consultancy Services to work with both producers and distributors to reduce their need for waste disposal. Pam was a mentor to many, a person with infinite energy who gave back to industry, the community and the environment. Sometimes it’s true she didn’t mince her words, but her views and advice were never offered with malice or disrespect. This attitude along with her enthusiasm and specialist knowledge was recognised by her appointment to many boards and authorities. Pam was serving as a board member on Environment Victoria, Business Skills Victoria, the Metropolitan Waste Management Group, ZeroWaste SA and was the Victorian Environment Minister’s representative and the Chair of Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria. She was also a member of EPA Victoria’s Prescribed Industrial Waste Advisory Committee and an Executive Member of the Waste Management Association of Australia (Victorian Branch), where she once served as president. Previously Pam had multiple terms as a board member of Gippsland Water, serving as its Deputy Chair and Acting Chair. All this was in addition to numerous committees and panels, whose number seemed to grow exponentially as the years went on. Pam’s creative strategy did more than transform waste management. She established a lead for industry more generally, laying out a successful template for businesses grappling with problems of environmental sustainability. In recent years she established yet another visionary company, Sustainable Learning Australasia. Pam felt it was not enough to audit and report on waste but that all employees across all industries, including Government, must be trained in sustainable practices. Sustainable Learning will continue Pam’s vision well into the future. Pam has a love of flying with her fixed wing aircraft, this continued throughout her life, including her joy in obtaining her helicopter licence. Pam will be remembered for her love of life, her love of family and friends and her environmental activism – always offered with practical solutions to secure a more sustainable environment for us all. Pam was driving back to Melbourne for work, alone, through the Gippsland hills she loved, when she was killed in a single vehicle accident. Her funeral at St Peters, East Melbourne, was filled to overflowing with family, friends, and colleagues. They celebrated a warm, loyal, strong-willed, honest, benevolent soul.
